History of Cambodia
The history of Cambodia is one of the oldest and richest in Southeast Asia, shaped by powerful empires, religion, colonialism, war, and recovery.
Early Civilizations (Before the Khmer Empire)
People lived in the region for thousands of years. Early kingdoms such as Funan (1st–6th century) and Chenla (6th–9th century) traded with India and China. Indian culture strongly influenced Cambodia’s language, religion, and architecture. Hinduism and later Buddhism became important religions.
The Khmer Empire (802–1431)
This was the golden age of Cambodia.
In 802 CE, King Jayavarman II united many territories and established the Khmer Empire. The empire became one of the most powerful civilizations in Asia.
Achievements
- Built massive temples and cities
- Developed advanced irrigation systems
- Controlled parts of present-day Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam
The most famous monument is Angkor Wat, built in the 12th century by King Suryavarman II. It is now Cambodia’s national symbol and one of the world’s largest religious monuments.
Another important ruler was Jayavarman VII, who built roads, hospitals, and temples such as Bayon and Ta Prohm.
Post-Angkor Period (15th–19th Century)
Cambodia became weaker and often caught between stronger neighbors like Thailand and Vietnam. The kingdom lost territory and political influence during this time.
Theravada Buddhism became the dominant religion and remains the main religion today.
French Colonial Period (1863–1953)
In 1863, Cambodia became a protectorate of France under the rule of King Norodom.
The French:
- Built roads and administrative systems
- Introduced Western-style education
- Controlled much of the economy and government
Cambodia remained under French colonial rule for about 90 years.
Independence and King Sihanouk (1953–1970)
Cambodia gained independence in 1953 under King Norodom Sihanouk.
The country stayed mostly neutral during the Vietnam War, although the conflict affected Cambodia heavily.
Khmer Republic and Civil War (1970–1975)
In 1970, General Lon Nol overthrew Sihanouk and created the Khmer Republic.
Civil war followed between government forces and the communist Khmer Rouge movement.
Khmer Rouge Regime (1975–1979)
One of the darkest periods in Cambodian history.
The Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot, took control in 1975 and renamed the country Democratic Kampuchea.
The regime:
- Forced people out of cities
- Abolished money and private property
- Closed schools and religions
- Sent many people to labor camps
Around 1.5 to 2 million people died from execution, starvation, disease, and forced labor.
Vietnamese Intervention and Recovery (1979–1991)
In 1979, Vietnam invaded Cambodia and removed the Khmer Rouge from power.
Years of conflict continued, but Cambodia slowly rebuilt with international support
Modern Cambodia (1991–Present)
The Paris Peace Agreements helped end decades of conflict.
In 1993:
- Cambodia became a constitutional monarchy again
- Norodom Sihanouk returned as king
Today, Cambodia is ruled under a constitutional monarchy with King Norodom Sihamoni as head of state.
Modern Developments
- Rapid tourism growth around Angkor Archaeological Park
- Expanding cities such as Phnom Penh and Siem Reap
- Growth in garment manufacturing, construction, and digital business
Cambodia today continues balancing modernization with preserving its deep cultural heritage.
